Pauline Curnier Jardin (FR): Grotta Profunda (the moody chasm)
Grotta Profunda is a stunning visual spectacle story about a deep cave in the French Pyrenees that would become the scene of the religious exaltation of the young nun Bernadette. After a vision of the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary, she is flooded with an all-embracing love and thrown into the cave’s womb, where she becomes the shocked witness to Pasolini’s extravagant cosmogonic scenes, revealing the mystique and essence of humanity. Did she find herself in the divine womb or grotto of bodily sin?

Marie Hájková, Petr Šprincl: Genesis
“Light the fire, we will not let our wine and crackling be taken!” The audiovisual production by Marie Hájková and Petr Šprincl creates a rich iconography that transcends the medium of the moving image. The installation of Genesis refers to the upcoming part of an endless series about Moravia, Beautiful Land, as well as to the birth of a new national costume, and a new nationalism that will lead to the destruction of all Moravia, that is, the world.

Krist Wood (US): Vulv
Internet artist Krist Wood is famous for his minimalist web pages with digitally painted images containing sensual scenes of heavily idealized landscapes that occupy a space somewhere halfway between dreams, the internet and maybe some other place. His work Vulv (2014) is included in a series of videos and images with mysterious light effects and a number of symbolic references.

Jonáš Strouhal: Dr. Brain
Dr. Brain is a laboratory, an operating theatre and a studio all in one, where you can try out different ways to hack your own brain. Thanks to the neurofeedback technique, a volunteer test subject paints with their eye movements in virtual space: if their attention slips the line breaks off, almost as if the colour has gone. But the brain wants to finish the work.

OTHER VISIONS CZ 2017
This year’s selection from Other Visions CZ 2017, overseen by the director of the Prague Futura Gallery and one of the most influential curators of today, Michal Novotný, alarmingly points out how the first euphoric experience of the Internet has quickly turned into a dystopian vision of a dominant reality.

The magical incantation “abracadabra” in the title of this year’s programme references the changes in moving images, its manipulation and, of course, animation over various technological, spatial or time conditions. The spell will serve as a tool for the many attempts to define the context of understanding the selected works, which become part of the ritual that is none other than PAF. The invited guests, their films, installations, performances, concerts or presentations will be featured over four days as PAF attempts to reinstate an aura to all technologically reproduced artistic works not only through the uttering of ‘abracadabra’ but also by expanding its own context, by which it attempts to erase the border between film festival, gallery of contemporary art and music club.
The eleventh annual competition of Czech moving image presents the ten selected competition finalists, whose works will be screened in the movie theatre and installed in the exhibition Other Visions 2017, in the Atrium of Konvict. The exhibition will take place during the Festival of Film Animation and Contemporary Art and admission is free to the public. The curator of Other Visions 2017 is the art theorist and curator Michal Novotný. He will be presenting Other Visions SK 2017 – a selection of Slovak produced moving images prepared with the cooperation of the festival 4 Elements, the curator of which is film critic Eva Filová. The section is focused for the long term on questions about distribution, archivization and the presentation of the moving image.
In PAF’s programming schedule, the section Aport animation sits in juxtaposition to the others. It closely follows the main theme, which this year regards the varied forms of understanding the concept of magic, while at the same time it keeps the beat thanks to stable categories that are linked to animated film either inherently or surprisingly unexpectedly. As tradition dictates, this year there will also be feature films, a series of short films within the AniPromítačka project, computer games, and works in which the history of Czech animation was written by amateur artists. Aport is sometimes a reminder of the almost forgotten treasures of animated film, but also a sample of the new possibilities in animation technology. The programme is both a challenge for seasoned cinephiles, and also a welcoming space for a young viewers.
